Dear Reader,
I don’t know many people in relationships with alcoholics who have the fortitude to keep journals. We are too busy avoiding responsibility for our own feelings, playing detective, beating pillows with our fists in futile efforts to release the anger, confusion, and despair that comes with trying to save everybody within a thousand mile radius but our own selves.
The author of Under the Influence of Grace unwittingly succeeded where she thought she failed. In twenty years of trying to save her husband, a fight that from the start is rigged, she didn’t know that the notebooks she filled with her experience, shame, and pain would ultimately create a source of support and inspiration for others living in the nightmare.
I believe that she will come to understand, when this book touches others as it has touched me.
I edited the pages, studied her words. My hope as I worked was that somewhere, someone inside a painful dark hour would find the book, and receive the kind of healing I have experienced from the author’s words.
Message, in three parts
1. I am not alone. Others have gone before me. More still will follow. We codependents are a breed, it’s in our DNA, maybe, or gestated in the formative years of childhood that shape us to become souls that fall for other souls that can only save themselves, or, like Steve, remain victim to drugs and alcohol until the inevitable tragedy occurs.
Others have endured terror-filled nights, crossed countries to escape from the annihilation that drug and alcohol addiction reaps – not just for the takers, but for those that love the takers with all of their hearts.
2. I cannot save anyone but my own self. Simple, to the point, true as the day is long.
3. When I begin to love myself, and take action to enter that mystical and ethereal world of self care, daily practice, commitment to doing whatever it is that I need, versus what everyone else needs – the world changes. Instantly. Life continues on a path never thought possible before. Happiness enters. Where there was only rejection and failure before, acceptance and serenity take hold, and like an antibiotic, or anti-matter, healing overtakes everything. Dark becomes light, and pain becomes a challenge, not the challenger.
I have been in love with an alcoholic for almost ten years. For the first time in almost thirty-five years, I love myself as much as I love him, or anybody else.
For those of us in codependent relationships- we know the bounty of our love, the ferocity of our commitment, the never-ending well. Under the Influence helped me to dive into mine.
There is no drink, no drug, no pill that will make you feel like you do when you are under the influence of that kind of grace.
This book is made of the pages of a young girl's heart. She should have been adored and nurtured, not terrorized and tortured. Her three daughters should be making plans with their dad to meet for coffee, get to the next play performance. Instead, the girl became a revered English teacher, took the pages, and made them into the book, for all of the hearts out there that deserve just as much. The daughters are all grown, talented, beautiful, and kind.
The wisdom that got the girl this far is on these pages.

This is an amazing book! I literally read it in one day, I could not put it down. I was able to relate to the author and her struggles. You have to keep reminding yourself that these are real memoirs and upon that realization, your heart really goes out to her. If anyone struggles with an alcoholic and/or abusive spouse, controlling father, weight issues and self-esteem issues, this is a must read. It gives you strength and gives the feeling of "if she can do it, then why can't I" . You will laugh, cry and be angry that someone can treat another person so cruelly. You just have to read it to understand all the emotions this book gives!Product details

Helpful. Reading Her thoughts and daily life of not giving up, moving forward after her ex husband's death. Her 17 year old daughter's poem at the end of this book sums up what the aftermath of addiction does till loved ones.
"Under the Influence of Grace" is a tough read, and I mean that in a good way. If you've ever known an alcoholic, or maybe have been one yourself, you'll be able to uncomfortably relate to the author's personal experience. Told in a series of journal entries dating back to 1999, up until the present day, the story follows the decline of the author's relationship with her alcoholic husband, her own personal struggles in the wake of the divorce, and her personal demons.
The language can be really ugly. Other times, it's really beautiful. Steve, the ex-husband, is well drawn. Not just a monster; I felt sympathy towards him, even though I was repulsed by him.
The story is heavy and takes some time to digest. Even so, I'd recommend it. Especially if you've been through the same hell of substance abuse.
