Eye to Eye is a riveting account of triumph following one of the darkest chapters in history. Beautifully written, this is a must-read for those interested in the Holocaust, history, and most of all, in the resilience of the human spirit.
It's rare that you'll read a first hand accounting of the author's experiences from his pre-war innocent days to the horrors he encountered. Every day was a test of his survivor skills and he was so grateful to see the next day. After reading the book, I came away with a new appreciation for my freedom and while I'm sad for the author to have lost loved ones so dear to him, he also had loved ones that were saved and able to start his life again in a country where he could be free.
This is a rare first-hand account of a Holocaust survivor. This book is not like many other Holocaust accounts, you get to experience how much luck had to play a role in Ludwig's life as well as looking at the lives of the individuals and their families that protected the Charatans. So many people had so much to lose by helping but risked it all in the name of humanity. There are two sides to the generosity of these people and the brutality of the Nazi soldiers. It is also fascinating to read Ludwig's testimony against Fritz Gebauer.
A real page-turner. Mr. Charatan's story is one of resilience, growth, and retribution. It is truly unique, and I have highly recommended this to all of my friends and family members. Can't wait for it to become a movie!
